Our MUSEUM’S History

2017

On July 07, 2017, MRMS registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies.

On September 04, 2017, Nova Scotia Heritage Minister visited the Museum and was very impressed. MRMS requested that the Railway Station be designated as a Nova Scotia Heritage Site.

On November 23, 2017 MRMS accepted a Letter of Offer from the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources to purchase the Middleton Railway Station and Lands for $1.00.

2018

On April 18, 2018, Stanec completed an Environmental Assessment of the Middleton Railway Grounds.

2019

In April 2019 an email was received from the War Museum in Ottawa regarding Nuclear Fallout Reporting Posts (NFRP) constructed during the 1960s. The Middleton Station has one of the few remaining such Posts left in Canada. This Post needs extensive work and with renovations, public viewing could be possible.

June 2019 Lawrencetown Education Centre students cleaned up Station Grounds.

Fall 2019 Little Excavating cleared the debris etc., from the area west of the station. Topsoil was scraped samples went to Santec for testing. A Geo. Tech Cloth was placed on the entire area.

2020

On March 19, 2020, MRMS sent a letter to the Municipality of the County of Annapolis requesting that the CNR steam locomotive, located at the Upper Clements Theme Park, be gifted to the MRMS.

On August 18, 2020, the County of Annapolis unanimously agreed to give the MRMS the CNR Steam locomotive and four boxcars to MRMS. MRMS was responsible to find funding to remove the rolling stock.  MRMS approached Premier Stephen McNeil and he gave his full support and contacted CN Chair Robert Pace.

In early October CN Chair, Robert Pace sent a CN Crew to install tracks in front of the Station. The Crew also installed tracks in the Parking Lot for future Rolling Stock. The installation of a new wooden boardwalk and paving in front of and to the side of the Station was completed.

October 06, 2020, the Nova Scotia Executive Council approved issuing a deed to convey the Middleton Railway Station and 1.5 acres to the Middleton Railway Museum Society.

November 2020 Alan R. Abraham Jr., Chairman of CN’s Halifax Community, made a donation to upgrade the Station. A new furnace was installed in the Station and heat pumps in the Freight Shed. Rotary Club of Middleton donated money for a second heat pump. Vice President of the Municipal Group of Companies, Alan Abraham Jr., offered the services of Dexter Construction. This group cleaned up the Station property and created a large base, at Upper Clements Park, for A W Leil’s 750 Tonne crane. This new base allowed for the lifting and moving of the CNR locomotive to Middleton Station. 

December 2020, with the help of Premier Stephen McNeil a grant was given from the NS Department of Community, Cultural, and Heritage for the moving of the CNR locomotive from Upper Clements Park to the Middleton Station.

2021

On January 21, 2021, the Province of Nova Scotia deeded the Middleton Railway Museum and 1.5 acres to the Middleton Railway Museum Society. Legal transactions were provided by Waterbury Newton lawyer Randall Prime at no cost.

 In September 2021 the CN Boxcars were removed from Upper Clements Park. Rick Jacques, Harvest Trail Coordinator made arrangements with the NS Department of Transportation and Active Transit to transport one boxcar to Middleton, two boxcars to Berwick and one boxcar to Wolfville.

Fall of 2021 Rick Jacques cleaned up Station land west of the Station Compound.

October 2021 CBC Still Standing filmed our CNR Locomotive with Johnny Harris interviewing MRMS’s Rolling Stock Manager, John McDonald.

2022

April 2022 MRMS received a New Horizon grant and the Freight Shed has been re-shingled.

May 2022 Lawrencetown Education Centre students assisted our volunteers in the cleanout of the boxcar and other areas around the station.

On July 13, 2022, MRMS received a check from a Foundation to do a complete restoration of the Station Waiting Room. The restoration will begin this September.
